Art at Willoughton:
At Willoughton Primary School we recognise how important the Art and Design curriculum is. We aim to inspire the children’s creative side and explore how they can create their own ideas with different media and present them in a range of ways. We believe a high-quality art and design education should inspire, engage and challenge children - enabling pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form and pattern.
Our curriculum offers a variety of Art and Design lessons, linking to units throughout the wider curriculum. The children will be introduced to a range of artists and styles of art, which will engage their curiosities and motivate them to try something new. Additionally, as they learn about the history, roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact that it has on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures.
Our Intent:
Our intent is that our teaching of Art and Design will help pupils to:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences,
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques,
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design,
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
How we implement this:
At Willoughton Primary School, we will achieve this by:
- Art being taught throughout the year, linking to focused units of work. Additionally, each class has an Art and Design driver unit, meaning that Art is the main focus of work.
- The children learn about a range of artists, their background and what their style of art is.
- Teaching a predominantly skills-based curriculum, which covers drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and printing. Full details of our Art and Design curriculum can be found in our progression grids.
- Fostering an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists and art movements, we have an “Arts Week” towards the end of the year, where the children can try different medias linking to a focused topic, such as identify, religion, books, seasons and many more.
- Encouraging each child to evaluate their artwork and that of others, both with peers and adults.
- Celebrating effort, progress and achievement in art through displays and exhibitions.
- Encouraging children to use their sketch books as a place to practice and make mistakes, to show what does and doesn’t work within their practices and developments of final pieces.
- Children are encouraged to enjoy and explore art, using a range of media.
The impact:
Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to show progression of skills and support the children’s expression throughout different activities. By the time the children leave Willoughton Primary School, we want them to be confident to explore, experiment and take risks, when completing different art pieces, placing value on the process and journey that they take to reach their final piece. We measure the impact of our curriculum through book looks, informal learning walks by the subject leader and pupil voice, to hear what the children have to say about the subject. We want the children to enjoy what they are learning and have the chance to try different things. The children take part in a range of art projects within the classroom and as a school we come together to complete an Arts Week – where we showcase the children’s art and focus on different areas of art e.g. photography, 2D and 3D art.
